John Williams reteamed with Irwin Allen for the 1972 action film "The Poseidon Adventure," a risk-taker of a movie that worked out well for everyone involved and officially created the disaster-film genre. Williams does well in creating a strong opening but keeps his orchestra subdued throughout the film to keep the atmosphere of doom and gloom always present, with little sense of hope. Host Jeff Commings is on hand to detail the highlights from the score and how the film set a few precedents. Take a journey through hell -- though we promise you'll enjoy every minute of it!

Then from this to another type of film, and another type of score, "Images." I never saw the film in the theaters, but it was a surprise to hear the soundtrack on the radio early one morning. It was one one hand, completely unsettling, with sounds of weird percussion, and then delicate melodies. It seemed unearthly, psychologically warped, and influenced by Bernard Herrmann, and Jerry Goldsmith. I didn't see the film until years later, and it was disappointing.

I loved the opening credits of The Poseidon Adventure, with the musical representation of a large, impressive ocean liner, slowly moving through the ocean, its massive weight seemingly unstoppable, and incapable of being damaged. Under it all is an ominous feeling, dread with a growing tension, but still a graceful tension. It's too bad the film didn't live up to the theme that made me feel like I was going to get loads of dramatic terror and suspense. The script was especially weak, with some lines that were so bad they were funny, like Carol Lynley, confronted with her dead brother, the musician, she asks Red Button, Did you like his music?
